Dr. Barry Lord went home to be with the Lord on March 6, 2025. A foundational leader at Southern California Seminary, Barry paved the way for countless biblical, licensed therapists and psychologists, leaving a profound impact on the field of Christian counseling. His presence, stories, and warm smile filled every room he entered, and his influence continues through the many professionals he mentored—those who carry his wisdom and “Barryisms” into their careers, ministries, and families around the world.
Some of his most memorable sayings, whether his own or adapted from others, are etched in the hearts of many:
- “That which you suppress, you amplify.”
- “If you were guaranteed that you could not fail, what would you attempt?”
- And the ever-classic, “How’s that working for you?”
Barry’s own journey of overcoming a difficult childhood fueled his passion for protecting children, strengthening families, and inspiring others to love deeply. He modeled these values daily, encouraging counselors and leaders to prioritize their loved ones and treat their spouses as the most important person in their lives. More than anything, Barry loved God and devoted his life to serving Him by guiding, teaching, and mentoring others with wisdom and compassion.
As an educator, Barry transformed the Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology program at Southern California Seminary into a thriving department. He was instrumental in pioneering the Doctorate of Psychology program, proudly graduating as part of its first cohort. A natural mentor, he poured wisdom and guidance into those around him, shaping future leaders and influencing countless lives.
Beyond academia, Barry founded DV Counselor Training, an organization approved by the state of California to certify domestic violence counselors. His dedication to guiding the transformation of domestic violence offenders and supporting those society often overlooked was a testament to his compassionate heart and faith in God’s power to redeem lives. He became a respected expert in forensic psychology and neuroscience, frequently consulting for jails, prisons, and law enforcement agencies. He also cherished his time presenting at the American Association of Christian Counselors’ biennial World Conference, where he inspired fellow professionals with his insights. Barry was a steadfast supporter and mentor to Dr. Julie Hayden and played a key role in her growth and success, including the development of Rhombus University with Dr. Ray Hayden.
Though Barry embraced “retirement,” he was always engaged in meaningful work. He spent these years alongside the love of his life, Peggy, as well as his son, daughter-in-law, and cherished grandchildren. His family was always his top priority.
Barry departed this world ready to be with Jesus and his legacy of love, wisdom, and dedication will live on. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered through the lives of the counselors, leaders, and loved ones he inspired.
In remembrance, we celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Barry Lord, “Pappa Bear,” —mentor, teacher, leader, and faithful servant of God.
